Principles of Inheritance

As we study the principles of inheritance, we need to realize that God has desired that everyone have some type of inheritance. The principles of inheritance were mirrored first in the life of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It was to them inheritance was promised.

Abraham trusted God all of his life and yet, in his lifetime, inherited nothing but a graveyard.

God began to speak to me about principles of inheritance. Although I knew there must be some that govern inheriting, I had not had God delineate them for me. He spoke to me that I needed to study the subject throughout the Word. What we will consider together is the result of the Holy Spirit leading me through the study.

1.    Notice that God gave promise to Abraham concerning inheritance.
    a.    Genesis 15:7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
        i.    Abraham did not know what land he had been called to inherit, until he stood on it and God said, this is that.
ii.    God’s relationship with Abraham started with a promise.
    b.    Genesis 15:8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
        i.    Abraham required some type of sign or proof from God. If the father of faith required proof, then it is not wrong for us to ask God for proof.
            (1)    God did not reprove Abraham for asking for proof.
    c.    Genesis 28:4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
        i.    There will possibly be a time of being a stranger in our inheritance even though we are in the place God has destined for us to inherit. We will feel like a stranger, be treated like a stranger, and have opposition to all that God has said is ours.

    d.    Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
        i.    In order for it to be extremely clear, Consider!!
            (1)    For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world his seed......through the righteousness of faith.

2.    There is an inheritance for everyone.
    a.    Numbers 26:54 To many thou shalt give the more inheritance, and to few thou shalt give the less inheritance: to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.
        i.    Our inheritance is given to us, according to the number in our household.
            (1)    This allows a certain validity to the size of the church dictates the size of the inheritance. The only problem with this is that many work on increasing the size of the congregation and forget to go on and possess the inheritance.
            (2)    Although the inheritance is tied to the size of the church, our focus should never be size, but, inheriting.

3.    Only by helping others obtain there inheritance will I be able to fully possess and live in my own.
    a.    Numbers 32:18 We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
    b.    Numbers 32:32 We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.

4.    Women have the right to inherit.
    a.    Numbers 27:7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.
    b.    Job 42:15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

    c.    Joshua 17:6 Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons: and the rest of Manasseh’s sons had the land of Gilead.

5.    Inheritance Must be possessed.!!!
    a.    Numbers 27:8-11  And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter. 9 And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren. 10 And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father’s brethren. 11 And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.

6.    Another tribe, is not to have the inheritance belonging to his brother.
    a.    Numbers 36:7,9   So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers......      9 Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; but every one of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself to his own inheritance.

7.    God has ordained that there be leadership whose responsibility it is to cause Israel(the Israel of God; Gal. 6:16) to inherit that which God has promised them.
    a.    Deuteronomy 1:38 But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
    b.    Deuteronomy 3:28 But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

iii.    The place he brings us from is an iron furnace,
iv.    That is a our Egyptian experience.
        v.    Whatever we are to be is it unto Him.

        i.    God drives out the nations before us.
            (1)    They are greater than we are.
            (2)    They are mightier than we are.
ii.    He drives out the nations before us through hand to hand combat with us.
            (1)    He drives them out using us as His instrument to do so.
iii.    By us driving them out, He brings us into the land.
iv.    By driving them off their land, He gives it to us.
        v.    In this way we inherit our inheritance.

11.    The blessings of God affect everyone in the whole of the land.
    a.    Deuteronomy 15:4 Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the LORD shall greatly bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it:
ii.    There will be abundant blessing as we enter into that land.

15.    There needed to be a mapping of the inheritance.
    a.    Joshua 18:4 Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.

    a.    Joshua 18:7 But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.

    b.    Genesis 49:5-7  Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.  6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.  7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

18.    The leader receives his inheritance after his work is done. He cannot inherit until all the rest have inherited.
    a.    Joshua 19:49,51  When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them: .....  51 These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.

19.    When the judgment of God is visited upon a group or tribe, it is never the purpose of God to entirely eliminate that tribe’s place vision or inheritance.
    a.    Judges 21:17 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.

20.    The Book of Ruth teaches an awesome principle concerning inheritance.
    a.    Ruth 4:5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. ..... 10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
        i.    It is never God’s heart for inheritance to be lost.
