The Sign of the Prophet Jonah

John 2:6   Walk even as He walked
1Pet 2:21  Follow in His steps

Matthew 19:28  And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Matthew 12:39-40 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

Luke 11:29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. 30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

Matthew 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

The SIGN OF THE SON OF MAN  then, is 3 days and 3 nights in the HEART OF THE EARTH

In order to grasp this we need to look at the 2nd Chapter of Jonah and exegete it.

Jonah 2:1-10     Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly, (v2) And said,

1.    I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD,

    a.    Affliction is straightened circumstances. In other places in scripture this is called a Net.
i.    Psalm 66:8-13 O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard: 9 Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved.  10 For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. 11 Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins. 12 Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place
ii.    Isaiah 54:10-14 For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee. 11 O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. 12 And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. 13 And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children. 14 In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.

2.     and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I

    a.    The Belly of Hell is referred to by David in Psa. 139:8
        i.    Psalm 139:8 ... if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there
ii.    Psalm 18:4-6 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.  5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.  6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.
iii.    Psalm 86:13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
    b.    and thou heardest my voice.   (V3)

3.    For thou hadst cast me into the deep  This deep could refer to several things.

        i.    Deep calling unto deep. I will give a fuller expression later.
            (1)    Psalm 42:7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
                (a)    He has cast me to into the depth of myself.
                (b)    He has cast me into the deep of Himself
                (c)    He has cast me into a deep situation that will reveal the depths in me, good and bad.
        ii.    in the midst of the seas;
            (1)    Seas in scripture often refer to humanity or sinners.
                (a)    Another place refers to humanity as the wilderness of the people.
                    (i)    Ezekiel 20:35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face.
                (b)     and the floods compassed me about:
            (2)    The parable of the wise man and the foolish man comes to mind.
                (a)    The rains came and the winds (of doctrine)  blew.
                    (i)    Matthew 7:25-27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
            (3)    Look to the study on being overwhelmed.

4.    all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

a.    In this place it seems to indicate a continuous and regular overwhelming just as waves in a sea are consistent in their coming.
b.    Psalm 42:1-11  As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.   2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? 4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. 5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.    6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.  7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. 8 Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. 9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?  11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
c.    Psalm 88:18 Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

5.     (v 4) Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

    a.    He feels that not even God can see his predicament
    b.    Looking toward the holy temple has nothing to do position or direction, it has to do with attitude.

6.    (v5) The waters compassed me about, even to the soul:

    a.    (words against me?)
    b.    They surround my Will mind, and emotions, walling me in like a prison wall. This is the power of words.
    c.     the depth closed me round about,
        i.    Going to the depths within and feeling overwhelmed by the intensity of them.

7.    the weeds were wrapped about my head.

    a.    This speaks to the battle in the mind and again feeling like there is more involved than I can handle and my thoughts race on and over one another so that I cannot make any sense of what is happening.
    b.    There are two things to note concerning the crucifixion and their possible application to this interpretation.
        i.    Jesus first drop of blood was shed in the garden in His battle with His will to bring it into subjection to the will of the Father.
ii.    Is it possible that Jesus wore the crown of thorns for the battle in the mind. Thoughts that pierce through all the defenses we have and trouble our thinking so that we have to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

8.    (v6) I went down to the bottoms of the mountains;

    a.    The word bottoms here speaks of the base or foundation of the mountains.
    b.    Could it be the mountains within that we have said be though removed and cast into the sea  to, and they have not gone? God searches out the foundation of all that is within me, through this experience He has trapped me in.

9.    the earth with her bars was about me for ever:

    a.    I feel like I am imprisoned in who I am and I cannot change. Like God is giving me no opportunity for change and has abandoned me in this situation.
        i.    Job 10:11 Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.

10.    Yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

    a.    He recognizes that it is not true even though it feels like it, looks like it, and is an impossible situation if God was not on the scene.
        i.    Psalm 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
            (1)    He that resides within us is the Holy One of God, therefore, God will not suffer that holy thing that is born in us to see corruption.

11.    (v7) When my soul fainted within me

    a.    God wanted to bring me to this point where my soul gave up, felt totally overwhelmed in all three areas of the
        i.    will
        ii.    mind
        iii.    emotions
    b.    Note that it is an internal work, not an external one.
        i.    It took this to bring him to the Lord.

12.    I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

    a.    The temple is a place in the spirit, not a physical place. Jonah had not moved nor was he sure which way he was facing. Yet, in the spirit he knew that his prayer was entering the temple of God because he had come to the end of himself and turned to God in prayer.

13.    (v8) They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

    a.    Somehow Jonah was tying lying vanities, with his running from the Lord. Possibly he tried to lie to himself concerning the importance of obeying God in this matter as not being that important. He did not look deep into his own heart and look at his motives until God trapped him.
    b.    Knowing that God’s mercies are new every morning we realize that what God had laid out for him he walked away from. When God has laid them out for me they are now mine to do with what I desire. He forsook them. LAM 3:23 (The word used for Compassions is translated mercy 30 times other places it is used in the scripture.)

14.    (v9) But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving;

    a.    I will sacrifice a sacrifice of praise for this situation that has brought me this revelation concerning the mercy of God and the depth of my need of Him.

    b.    I will pay that I have vowed.

        i.    He had vowed something to the Lord that we are not told of and therefore knew that he had to pay it in order to be released from the hell he was in.
    c.    Salvation is of the LORD.
        i.    The ultimate revelation of my redemption.

(v10) And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

The sign of the Son of Man that is given for the end times, is this sign. As it happened in the Head of the Body, the Son of Man, so it will happen in the corporate Body of Christ, The Corporate Son being formed in this hour. Those who allow the Spirit of God to work this deeply within them, exposing all of that which contaminates the manifestation of the Son through them, will be the ones in  whom the Lord is admired. (2 Thess. 1:10 When He shall come ... to be admired in all them that believe..) It will be those who allow this process whom the Lord will count “worthy of this calling”.(v. 11)

Will you allow Him to do this in you?
